1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Notched serifs on all rim lettering — with the strongest notching concentrated on UNITED — characterize this light spread doubled die reverse for the 1964 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime. Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-444 and DMR-019, the die shows three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B with a small die gouge on the rim under the E of DIME at MDS, and Stage C with both reverse and obverse in late die state (LDS). The obverse paired with this die is identified as ODV-011, distinguished by a blunt 9 in the date. Notched serif doubling occurs when the secondary hub impression lands close enough to the primary that it overlaps the letter body but offsets the fine serif extensions, producing a stepped or notched appearance at the letter terminals — an effect that is most pronounced on letters nearest the rim where rotational hub shifts create the greatest displacement. The 1964 Roosevelt Dime is the final year of 90% silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned dimes to copper-nickel clad composition. Philadelphia struck hundreds of millions of dimes in 1964 as the Mint tried to address the national coin shortage, and the volume of dies consumed generated numerous varieties. The blunt-9 obverse die variant (ODV-011) provides an additional attribution point for die pairing confirmation.
