1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Struck as a proof in the final year of 90% silver Washington Quarters, WDDR-007 shows clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 12 o'clock, affecting QUARTER DOLLAR and both branch ends on the reverse. The clockwise rotation from a high pivot means spread increases progressively toward the bottom, with QUARTER DOLLAR receiving the strongest displacement while elements near 12 o'clock remain unaffected. Two small die gouges provide reverse markers: one on the lower left of the eagle's neck, and another on the leaf above the second L in DOLLAR. No significant obverse markers have been documented. Proof mirrored fields enhance the visibility of the clockwise spread, as displaced letter edges catch light at angles distinct from the surrounding reflective surface. The 1964 proof quarter represents the end of an era — beginning in 1965, no proofs were produced for three years during the Special Mint Set period, and when proof production resumed in 1968, quarters were struck in copper-nickel clad.
