Description

Among the final proof coins struck in 90% silver before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended the precious metal's use in circulating denominations, this 1964 Proof Roosevelt Dime carries Class I clockwise (CW) doubled die reverse doubling on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DIME, and the bottom of the olive branch. Designated WDDR-025 by the Wexler Team, the twenty-fifth cataloged reverse doubled die for the 1964 proof issue reflects the enormous volume of proof coins produced at Philadelphia that year — collectors stockpiled the last silver proofs, driving mintages to record levels. A distinctive blunt tail on the 9 in the date serves as an obverse die marker, while the reverse shows a small die gouge appearing as a dot below the left side of the M in DIME. These diagnostic markers help distinguish WDDR-025 from the numerous other 1964 proof doubled die varieties. Struck to the mirror-finish proof standard at 17.9mm, pairing Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait with the torch-and-branches reverse. The Class I CW rotation pattern is best observed on ONE DIME where clockwise displacement separates the doubled image most clearly.
