Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1964 proof Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverse shows notching on the upper letters of UNITED and light extra thickness on E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Notching — small step-like irregularities along letter edges — is a characteristic manifestation of close hub doubling where the secondary impression slightly offsets the letter contours rather than creating clearly separated secondary images. The lighter extra thickness on E PLU suggests the hub displacement produced diminishing intensity across the reverse, with stronger effects on UNITED and weaker effects on the motto. Specific die markers aid attribution: on the obverse, a blunt tail on the 9 in the date provides a distinctive diagnostic, with parallel die scratches running northwest from the upper left of the I in IN. On the reverse, a short horizontal die gouge appears on the center left of the E in STATES. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known, making the Wexler designation the primary catalog entry. The 1964 proof dime was the final year of 90% silver proof production before the Coinage Act of 1965 changed the composition to copper-nickel clad, giving these proof varieties historical significance as the last of their silver composition.
