Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling on a Philadelphia Mint proof strike, WDDO-034 on the 1964 Jefferson Nickel shows nice doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. Doubling. Nice Class II spread on these motto letters provides a clear diagnostic under moderate magnification, as the distorted hub mechanism produces varying degrees of displacement across the legend. Die markers on the obverse include a die dot in Jefferson's hair to the right of the forehead. Reverse markers include a die scratch on the rim below CA of AMERICA. The 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel represents the last year of proof production at Philadelphia before the Mint temporarily suspended proof coinage in 1965-1967 during the coin shortage crisis, and resumed at San Francisco in 1968.
