1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-029
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar on a proof 1964 Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-029 exhibits close Class V pivoted hub doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class V doubling results from a rotational shift between hub impressions — the hub pivots slightly around a fixed point, creating spread that radiates outward from the pivot axis. The close nature of the spread means the doubled elements are separated by only a small distance, requiring careful examination under magnification to detect. Die markers provide attribution support: the obverse carries a die gouge between the upper portions of U and S in TRUST, while the reverse is separately listed as 1964 Pr 5c WDDR-099 — indicating this die pair produces both a doubled die obverse and a doubled die reverse, making it a dual doubled die combination of exceptional collector interest. The 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint for that year's proof sets, the last proof sets produced before the 1965-1967 hiatus when the Mint suspended proof production during the coinage transition away from silver. Twenty-nine doubled die obverses cataloged for the proof 1964 date demonstrates the tremendous depth of die variety research applied to this terminal pre-transition proof year. The combination of both obverse and reverse doubled dies from the same die pair elevates WDDO-029 beyond a standard doubled die attribution into the premium category of dual-variety specimens.
