Description

Formerly cataloged as WDDO-040 before renumbering, the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-028 also replaced a previously delisted listing, maintaining accurate attribution for a verified Class II distorted hub doubled die obverse. Attribution is in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1964 WDDO-028 Proof, documented by Brian A. Ribar. Doubling displays a nice spread on LIBERTY, the star, and the date — covering three distinct obverse reference areas. A die dot on the forehead of the Jefferson portrait provides an additional identifying marker in the most closely examined area of the obverse design. This variety is paired with a WWHR-003 reverse — a Wexler Working Hub Reverse designation identifying the specific reverse die used in combination, giving the full die pairing additional reference depth beyond the obverse doubling. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel was the last year proof nickels were included in the annual proof set before suspension from 1965 through 1967 during the coinage law transition. Collectors searching older references may find this variety listed as WDDO-040; the current catalog number is WDDO-028.
