1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-023
ErrorDescription
Earning the prestigious "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, WDDO-023 on the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class V (Pivoted Hub) doubling with spread concentrated on WE TRUST. Pivoted Hub doubling occurs when the hub pivots around a fixed point during the hubbing process, producing a rotational displacement that varies in magnitude based on distance from the pivot axis. A slanted die scratch left of the front of Jefferson's collar marks the obverse die. This proof variety is paired with a doubled die reverse — also listed as 1964 Proof 5c WDDR-083 — making it a rare instance where both obverse and reverse dies carry hub-doubling anomalies. The sharply mirrored fields of proof coinage render the WE TRUST spread particularly visible, as the displaced letters stand in high contrast against the reflective surface. The 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel represents the final year of Philadelphia proof production before the transition to San Francisco beginning in 1968.
