1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting Class V pivoted hub doubling, WDDO-020 of the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel shows doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class V doubling results from the hub pivoting during impression, creating rotational displacement where elements farther from the pivot point receive greater spread. The affected design elements span from the left side of the obverse through the central star to the date, documenting the rotational arc across multiple features. Obverse die markers include a die scratch below the front lower tip of Jefferson's collar, providing a quick confirming diagnostic, while the reverse is independently listed as WWHR-002. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDO-020 Proof, this variety was attributed by John A. Wexler. The 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel was the final proof issue before the three-year suspension of proof sets from 1965 through 1967, when Special Mint Sets replaced traditional proof coinage. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Philadelphia for annual proof sets, this terminal-year proof Jefferson Nickel documents Class V pivoted hub doubling across legend, star, and date on the last proof nickel before the SMS era.
