1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDO-019 of the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with strong spread on LIBERTY, the star, and the date — a trio of widely separated obverse elements whose uniform displacement confirms a significant hub distortion event. A much smaller spread also appears on IN GOD WE TRUST, contrasting the bold primary doubling with its subtler extension across the motto. Strong doubling on the star — positioned between LIBERTY and the date — provides a particularly effective diagnostic, as the star's geometric symmetry makes any displacement immediately apparent. The 1964 proof represents the final year of Philadelphia proof production before operations moved to San Francisco in 1968. Diagnostic die markers support attribution: a die dot appears left of Jefferson's ear, and another sits to the lower right of the F of OF. These paired markers confirm the specific working die independent of the doubling. Strong Class II spread on proof coinage benefits from polished dies, which render displaced images with crisp definition against mirror-like fields.
