1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDO-018 of the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class V (Pivoted Hub) doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. In a Class V event, the hub rotated around a fixed pivot point during the hubbing process, producing doubling that radiates outward from that pivot — elements closer to the center of rotation show minimal displacement while those further away display progressively stronger spread. The year 1964 marks the final Philadelphia Mint proof production of Jefferson Nickels before proof operations relocated to San Francisco beginning in 1968, lending terminal-year significance to this variety. Diagnostic die markers support attribution: a small die dot appears to the left of the W in WE, and another small die dot sits to the right of the bottom of Jefferson's queue (the tied ribbon of his ponytail). This obverse die is paired with the reverse carrying WDDR-016, meaning both sides of coins from this die marriage exhibit doubled die characteristics. Collectors examining 1964 proof nickels should focus on the date and LIBERTY, where the pivoted hub's rotational spread is most pronounced at the greatest distance from the pivot center.
