1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Discovered by Billy G. Crawford on a 1964 proof Jefferson nickel, WDDO-014 presents a Class II (Distorted Hub) spread toward the rim that shows clearly on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The rim-ward direction means the secondary images are displaced outward from the coin's center, producing thickened letter edges on the side closest to the rim — a diagnostic direction that helps attributors distinguish this variety from inward-spread or lateral-spread doubled dies on the same date. As a proof issue, this nickel was struck with enhanced pressure on polished planchets, and the reflective proof surface can accentuate the doubling visibility. Obverse die markers include two nearly vertical die gouges positioned between the bottom of Lincoln's coat and the I of IN near the rim. The reverse is listed as 1964 Pr 5c WDDR-029, meaning this die pair produces doubling on both sides — an uncommon pairing that gives collectors two attributable varieties from a single coin.
