1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
Error
Description
Attributed by Jennifer Casazza, WDDO-009 of the 1964 proof Jefferson nickel carries a Best Of designation among nickel doubled die varieties, recognizing its exceptional visual impact. This Class VI distended hub doubling shows very strong extra thickness on the lower portion of the letters of TRUST and the hair above Jefferson's forehead, with the spread decreasing quickly from right to left over GOD WE. Class VI distended hub doubling occurs when the hub expands or contracts between impressions, producing a distinctive thickening rather than a directional shift of design elements. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge appearing as a dot below and between the G and O of GOD. The reverse carries two die scratches extending north from the upper right of the second U of UNUM. The 1964 proof Jefferson nickel is the last year of the original proof production run before the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set hiatus, and the Best Of designation makes WDDO-009 one of the most sought-after doubled dies in the entire Jefferson nickel series.
