1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-025
Error
Description
Distinguished by a very close extra bar below the L of LIBERTY and an exceptionally detailed set of die markers spanning both surfaces, the 1964 WDDO-025 is one of the most thoroughly documented doubled die obverse varieties for the date. Submitted by Brian Ribar, the variety is cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ WDDO-025. The obverse die markers include a horizontal die scratch under the chin, a northwest-to-southeast die scratch just right of the chin, and an inverted "V" shaped die scratch near the center of the neck. Additional obverse markers include a small die gouge below the central right side of the horizontal bar of L of LIBERTY, a die scratch running southeast from the upper right E of LIBERTY, a die scratch running south-southeast from the lower right B of LIBERTY, a die gouge below the right side of the B, and a long curving die scratch running north-northeast from the top of the 9 in the date along with numerous mostly vertical die scratches. The reverse is equally rich in diagnostics: a small die gouge dot touches the underside of the left tip of the crossbar of T of UNITED, a die scratch runs from the upper A east-southeast to the second T of STATES, multiple parallel die scratches run through STATES OF and E PLURIBUS UNUM, two die gouge dots sit inside the third Memorial bay, mostly vertical die scratches appear inside the first and last two Memorial bays, and additional gouges and scratches appear around ONE and CENT. The presence of what appear to be two overlapping sets of die markers may indicate two documented die states of the same die, with progressive wear and additional tooling marks accumulating over the die's service life. Struck from the Philadelphia Mint's output of 2,648,575,000 business strikes on a 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet.
