1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
Error
Description
Remarkable for carrying two separate CONECA cross-references — 14-O-V-CW and 17-O-V-CCW — the 1964 WDDO-013 displays an unusual combination of both clockwise and counterclockwise pivoted hub doubling on a single die. Both designations fall under CONECA Class V (pivoted hub doubling), in which the hub was slightly rotated relative to the die between impressions, but the CW and CCW labels indicate pivot spreads in opposite rotational directions. Dual-direction pivoting on a single die is highly unusual and suggests a complex hubbing history, possibly involving more than two hub impressions or an asymmetric tilt of the hub during one of the applications. The counterclockwise spread is visible on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. On the obverse, a short horizontal die gouge sits above the B of LIBERTY and a die gouge dot appears in the field near the rim at approximately 9:30. The reverse carries its own diagnostic markers: a strong die scratch runs from the middle right E to the upper D of UNITED, a short strong die scratch extends north from the left cornice, and a die crack runs from the lower left side of the second A in AMERICA about a third of the way toward the rim. Also cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ WDDO-013 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety stands out among the 1964 Philadelphia doubled dies for its dual-pivot attribution. Struck from the Philadelphia Mint's output of 2,648,575,000 business strikes on a 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
