1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-098
ErrorDescription
Ninety-eight doubled die reverses for the 1964 Jefferson Nickel speaks to the immense die consumption during the final year before the Coinage Act of 1965, and WDDR-098 adds another Class II entry showing close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Close Class II spread requires magnification, appearing as a subtle shelf adjacent to the affected lettering. Reverse die markers include a die scratch between the first U and N of UNUM and a die scratch inside D of UNITED, providing two diagnostics distinguishing this die from the other 97 cataloged DDRs. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 1964 WDDR-098. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel saw record production as the Mint stockpiled coins ahead of anticipated compositional changes, requiring thousands of working dies each subject to hub-doubling events. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1964 maintained its traditional alloy even as silver was being removed from dimes and quarters the following year. The depth of the 1964 DDR census makes this date a rich field for variety specialists.
