1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-060

Description

Cataloged by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDR-060, this Jefferson Nickel displays Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with close doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right, and additional doubling on UNUM and the right side of the Monticello building. This listing was formerly designated WDDR-174 and replaces the original WDDR-060, which was delisted after being identified as a doubled working hub (see WWHR-002) — a cataloging revision that reflects the ongoing refinement in distinguishing doubled dies (affecting a single working die) from doubled working hubs (affecting all dies produced from that hub). The left-to-right increase in doubling intensity indicates the hub tilted during the hubbing process with the pivot point on the left side, producing greater displacement on the right where the distance from the fulcrum is greatest. Reverse die markers include slanted die scratches through the second U of UNUM and a die scratch inside the second O of MONTICELLO. No obverse markers are noted. Unlike the companion WDDR-065 listing for the same year, which is identified as a proof issue, this WDDR-060 listing does not carry a proof designation, indicating it was found on business-strike coins from regular production.
