1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-058

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1964 WDDR-058, this variety carries a notable administrative history. The original WDDR-058 designation was retired after the listed hub doubling was reclassified as a doubled working hub — now catalogued separately as WWHR-001. This replacement listing covers a genuine Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling on the reverse, with a spread toward the center that intensifies from left to right across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Slight doubling is also visible on UNUM. Two reverse die scratches serve as identifiers: one runs from the upper right side of the M in AMERICA to LO of MONTICELLO, and a second slants above the bottom crossbar of the E in AMERICA. No obverse die markers were noted. The 1964 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel was the last issue in the 90% silver nickel era — 35% silver during 1942-1945 wartime — and is the final year before the clad transition. Class II distorted hub doubling on the reverse of a terminal-year silver nickel makes this replacement listing especially relevant to collectors of mid-century variety coinage.
