1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-052

Description

Replacing a delisted catalog entry, this 1964 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-052 was attributed by Brian A. Ribar after being formerly designated WDDR-177. It replaces the original WDDR-052, which was determined to be a doubled working hub rather than a doubled working die (see WWHR-002). Class II hub doubling produces strong doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, making this one of the more visually impressive reverse doubled dies on the 1964 Philadelphia business strike nickel. The coin submitted for attribution was in very late die state, indicating extensive die use — late die state coins often show softened details and incipient die cracks alongside hub doubling characteristics. The relisting history reflects ongoing refinement of variety attribution: as understanding of doubled working hubs versus doubled working dies has evolved, some catalog numbers have been reassigned to maintain classification accuracy. The 1964 Philadelphia nickel saw one of the largest mintages in Jefferson Nickel history as the Mint pushed production ahead of 1965 composition changes, providing an enormous population where variety hunters continue discovering unexamined specimens.
