1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-057
Error
Description
Tracked across four die stages, the 1964 DDR-057 is a VarietyVista doubled die reverse on the Jefferson nickel exhibiting strong spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM as its primary diagnostic. Numbered UVC-1295 DMR-068, this Philadelphia Mint variety has an unusually comprehensive production record. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B places both sides at mid-die-state. Stage C finds both at late-mid die state, an intermediate classification capturing the transition between active use and terminal wear. Stage D records both sides at late die state, the final period before the die was retired. The 1964 Jefferson nickel holds a special place in American numismatics as coins from that year were hoarded extensively due to the nationwide coin shortage preceding the Coinage Act of 1965. The four-stage documentation is particularly valuable for understanding die longevity, as the progression from EDS through LMDS to LDS maps the complete arc of deterioration this reverse die experienced under the demands of high-volume 1964 production at Philadelphia.
