1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-040
Error
Description
Medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF AMERICA, and the right building edge of Monticello distinguish this 1964 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel DDR-040. The combination of spread on both legend text and an architectural element creates two diagnostic zones — the incused lettering and raised building edge respond differently to hub displacement, with the building edge producing a ghost line parallel to the primary structure. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1275 and DMR-048, the variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse are in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The 1964 Jefferson Nickel was the last year before Congress mandated removal of all mintmarks from U.S. coins for 1965-1967 as part of its response to a severe coin shortage — making 1964 the final pre-gap year where Philadelphia and Denver production can be distinguished. Medium spread sits between the barely perceptible light varieties and dramatic strong varieties, offering clearly visible doubling under standard magnification.
