While the doubling is characterized as light, its breadth across multiple design elements — covering both inscriptions and architectural features — makes it more broadly expressed than many stronger but more localized doubled dies. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state, unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die state, and Stage C (late die state, unconfirmed). The 1964 Jefferson nickel holds special significance as the final year before the Mint removed mintmarks from all coins during the 1965-1967 transition to clad coinage.
