1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-038
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1273 with die marriage DMR-046, this 1964 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays a light doubled die reverse with spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF AMERICA, and the right building edge of Monticello. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is the early die state with a die gouge in the northeast corner of the small right window and the obverse also in early die state, Stage B is mid-die state, and Stage C is late die state. The die gouge in the Monticello window at Stage A provides a useful die-state diagnostic for collectors determining where their specimen falls in the production sequence. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel holds special significance as the last year before the Mint began transitioning coinage compositions in response to the silver shortage, though nickels retained their 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy throughout. Philadelphia produced enormous quantities of Jefferson Nickels in 1964 to meet the surging demand for circulating coinage, and the high die consumption generated a substantial catalog of varieties. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait and Monticello design had been in continuous use since 1938. The light spread across the reverse inscriptions and building edge provides multiple diagnostic areas for attribution under moderate magnification.
