1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-027

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-1262 and DMR-035, this 1964 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits strong spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing in magnitude from left to right across the inscription, with lighter spread also visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The progressive increase in spread intensity across the inscription is characteristic of Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling, where the hub and die pivot around a fixed point, producing doubling that strengthens with distance from the pivot. Three die stages have been recorded, documenting the die's progression from early through late service. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel holds a distinctive position as the last year before the Mint eliminated silver from dime and quarter production under the Coinage Act of 1965 — though the nickel's composition was unchanged, the 1964 date saw extraordinary production volumes as the Mint attempted to address a nationwide coin shortage. The strong spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA makes DDR-027 one of the more visually accessible doubled die reverses for the date.
