1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022
Error
Description
Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety by the Wexler research team, WDDO-022 for the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits a strong clockwise Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling spread on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, radiating from a pivot point at approximately 8 o'clock near the rim. Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling is one of the more dramatic doubling mechanisms — instead of the entire design shifting uniformly (Class I) or distorting organically (Class II), the design rotates around a fixed pivot point, creating increasing spread at greater distances from the pivot. The 8 o'clock pivot position means elements in the upper right quadrant of the obverse — particularly LIBERTY and the date — show the strongest displacement. Die markers include a die gouge along almost the entire edge of the bottom of the bust on the obverse, while the reverse is cross-listed as 1964 Pr 5c WDDR-082, making this another combined DDO/DDR variety from the prolific 1964 proof date. The "Best Of" designation signals that this variety is considered among the most visually impressive or numismatically significant doubled dies in the Jefferson Nickel series — a distinction that carries weight with collectors and can command premium prices in the marketplace. The strong clockwise spread on LIBERTY is particularly eye-catching, as the bold sans-serif lettering shows clear separation between the primary and secondary impressions. As a 1964 proof with combined DDO/DDR status and "Best Of" recognition, WDDO-022 represents one of the premier Jefferson Nickel die varieties available to collectors.
