1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Carrying a revised attribution history, this proof 1964 Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse was formerly listed as WDDO-054 and now replaces the original WDDO-010 listing, which was delisted because it was too minor. Class II distorted hub doubling occurs when the hub is slightly tilted during die production, imparting a consistent directional spread onto the working die. Close Class II doubling shows on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. The reverse of this die pair is also cataloged as 1964 Pr 5c WDDR-044, making it a dual-attribution coin for collectors who value both sides of a variety. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the upper right of the D of GOD and a die dot on the back of Jefferson's head. As a proof issue struck at Philadelphia on Felix Schlag's classic design, this coin was produced with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, lending mirror-like fields that can make subtle doubling easier to detect under magnification. The renumbering from WDDO-054 to WDDO-010 reflects ongoing refinement in Wexler attribution catalogs as minor varieties are culled and stronger ones consolidated.
