The Wexler Team's attribution of WDDO-023 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDO-023) extends the doubled die obverse catalog for the 1964-D Lincoln Memorial Cent into territory that reflects the extraordinary die consumption of that production year. No additional cross-references are currently known for this variety. The Denver Mint's 1964 cent output of 3,799,071,500 pieces required a die manufacturing program of corresponding magnitude, with thousands of obverse working dies produced through the standard multi-impression hubbing process over the course of the year. Each hubbing session was an independent event: the obverse working hub was pressed into a heated die blank multiple times under hydraulic force, and each press carried its own small but real probability of fractional misalignment. Over thousands of repetitions, numerous dies inevitably received the slight hub displacement that creates a doubled die variety. The Wexler catalog has systematically documented these varieties as they have been discovered, authenticated, and assigned unique identifiers, building a comprehensive record of the hubbing anomalies that occurred during 1964-D die production. WDDO-023 preserves the doubled obverse from one such session.
