Description
Swoger catalog number D1963-2c. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for the 250th anniversary of Padre Junipero Serra's birth. Serra founded the California mission system beginning with Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769, eventually establishing nine missions along El Camino Real before his death in 1784 at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel. His missionary work among the indigenous peoples of Alta California transformed the region and laid the groundwork for Spanish colonial settlement along the Pacific coast. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. The "AR" designation denotes silver composition, making this the precious-metal variant of the Padre Serra anniversary design in the D1963-2 series.
Rarity Notes
