1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013 on the Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits light spread visible as notched corners, best seen on UNITED, the stem on the lower left olive, the right edge of the U in PLU of PLURIBUS, an elongated dot, and a split olive stem. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and first struck in 1946, was produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 2.50 grams and 17.9 mm diameter — the last year of silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the switch to cupronickel-clad composition. Die markers assigned by VarietyVista are UVC-413 and DMR-020, with three documented die states: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State remains unconfirmed. The notched-corner presentation of the doubling is characteristic of a close spread where the hub shift was minimal, producing subtle disruptions to the corners and edges of letters rather than full secondary images. The split olive stem diagnostic is particularly useful for attribution since it appears on a design element with fine detail where even slight doubling becomes visually distinct under magnification.
