1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016

Description

Documented by Lou Coles and cataloged as WDDR-016, this 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel shows a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a very nice spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and a closer spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The contrast between stronger spreading on EPU and tighter spread on UNITED STATES captures the non-uniform character of Class II doubling, where the distortion's magnitude varies with position across the die. Obverse die markers include two die gouges appearing as dots: one on the neck below the ear and one on the back of the head west of the LI in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die gouge is visible inside the bottom of the long left window of Monticello — a classic location for reverse die markers on Jefferson Nickel varieties. Proof Jefferson Nickels of 1963 were struck at Philadelphia using polished dies on polished planchets to achieve mirror field and frosted device contrast.
