1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015
ErrorDescription
Displaying Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1963 WDDR-015 Proof Jefferson Nickel shows well-defined spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing in intensity from left to right across the legend. Doubling also manifests on the right side of the Monticello building. This progressive left-to-right intensification is characteristic of Class II doubling, where hub distortion creates uneven displacement across the die face. Attributed by John A. Wexler, the reverse markers include die scratches below the R and B of PLURIBUS and a die scratch on the rim below the first A of AMERICA. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963 WDDR-015 Proof. The 1963 was the final year proof sets were produced at Philadelphia before the Mint suspended the program in 1965 due to the nationwide coin shortage. Proof Jefferson Nickels from this terminal Philadelphia era have been intensively studied by variety specialists, resulting in an extensive catalog of doubled dies from a narrow production window.
