1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Identified by John A. Wexler, this 1963 proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-012 showcases Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with nice doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM that decreases from left to right, joined by closer spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA also diminishing in the same direction. The decreasing left-to-right pattern on both the motto and the legend indicates the hub distortion was oriented such that the left portions of the reverse experienced greater displacement during die sinking. Obverse die markers show none noted. On the reverse, a small die dot appears to the left of the M in MONTICELLO, and a small die gouge sits at the upper left of the first A in AMERICA. The proof striking process, with its extra die polishing and elevated pressures, renders these doubled features with particular sharpness against the mirror-finish fields. WDDR-012 stands as one of the more visually appealing 1963 proof nickel reverse varieties, with its dual-inscription doubling providing ample confirmation points for attribution.
