Description

Another member of the eyelid-doubled family within the 1963 P-mint DDO catalog, WDDO-010 of the Lincoln Memorial Cent shows an extra eyelid below the normal eyelid, with its individuality established through a distinctive set of die markers distributed across both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a small die gouge can be found below the TY in LIBERTY, a short vertical die scratch can be found to the left of the bottom of the S in IN GOD WE TRUST, and numerous other die scratches running mostly south-southwest to north-northeast can be found throughout the obverse. The prevalence of directional die scratches running in a consistent south-southwest to north-northeast orientation suggests that the die surface was subjected to abrasion in a specific direction during manufacture or maintenance, possibly from cleaning or lapping operations intended to extend die life. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found inside the lower O in ONE, an interior-letter marker that is particularly useful for attribution because it occupies a protected area less susceptible to wear-related obliteration on circulated specimens. Philadelphia produced 754,110,000 cents in 1963 for general circulation, and the coin was struck on the standard 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet composition. Among the many 1963 P-mint DDO varieties showing extra eyelid doubling, WDDO-010 is best identified by first confirming the eyelid displacement and then checking for the die gouge below TY, the vertical scratch near S, and the reverse gouge inside the O of ONE. The coin features Brenner's obverse portrait and Gasparro's Memorial reverse.
