The 754,110,000 business-strike cents minted in 1963 consumed working dies at a remarkable pace, with each die individually manufactured through the multi-impression hubbing process that creates the mechanical conditions for doubled die formation. When the working hub is not precisely re-seated between impressions, the resulting offset imprints a ghost image alongside the primary design, and the degree and direction of that offset determine the character of the doubling visible on finished coins.
