1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-079
Error
Description
Assigned by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1219 and DMR-086, this 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel reverse doubled die exhibits a medium spread on STATES OF AMERICA increasing from left to right, extending to the right building edge of Monticello, with lighter spread on TS of CENTS, LLO of MONTICELLO, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is characterized by a die gouge dot on the upper base between Monticello's pillars 2 and 3 at MDS, with the obverse also MDS. Stage C, late die state, is unconfirmed. The pillar gouge in Stage B provides a uniquely localized marker within Monticello's architectural detail. Proof Jefferson Nickels of 1963 were struck at Philadelphia — proof production remained there until 1968, when San Francisco assumed the role. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse is rich in architectural fine detail, and doubled die specimens exhibit the spread well against polished proof fields. DDR-079 is among the more extensively numbered reverse doubled dies for this date.
