Description

Documented by VarietyVista with catalog codes UVC-1176 and DMR-043, this 1963 Jefferson Nickel DDR-035 presents light spread on PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, and the right lower portion of the Monticello building, with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right across each affected inscription. This left-to-right increase pattern reveals the geometry of the hub displacement, indicating the secondary hub impression was offset in a direction that produced progressively greater separation at rightward positions on the die face — an important diagnostic characteristic that helps distinguish this variety from others with similar affected design elements but different spread directions. Three documented die stages chart the working die's service life: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (LDS) identified by a die scratch running northeast from the lower right tall window of Monticello, with the obverse also in LDS. The Stage C die scratch northeast from the tall window provides a definitive attribution marker for late-state specimens, as this specific scratch developed only after extended die use and was not present during earlier production. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design features Thomas Jefferson's plantation home with its distinctive columned portico and dome, and the doubling on the right lower building creates subtle architectural distortion in the facade's lower structure.
