1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

On the proof 1963 Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-009 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM — rotational displacement caused by angular misalignment between hub and die during manufacture. The reverse die carries two die scratches above the right arch and a series of die dots to the lower right of the large center semicircular window on Monticello, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. Class II doubling produces a rotational pattern rather than the linear shift characteristic of Class I, with displacement varying across the die face based on distance from the rotation point. Proof Jefferson Nickels from the early 1960s were struck at the Philadelphia Mint (San Francisco resumed proof duties in 1968), and the meticulous striking process used for proofs can make subtle doubled die features more visible in the coin's mirror-like fields. Monticello's architectural details provide numerous reference points for detecting hub displacement.
