1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 57-R-II-C, this proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-006 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a strong constant spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and both sides of the building. The strong spread on both the lettering and Monticello's architecture makes this one of the more visually compelling proof Jefferson Nickel doubled dies. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge just left of the upper portion of the I of LIBERTY. Reverse markers include numerous micro die dots between the third and fourth columns and a small die dot at the top of the right arch. The center-directed spread affecting both sides of the Monticello building provides a distinctive diagnostic, as architectural elements with their straight lines and defined edges reveal doubling more readily than organic design features. The micro die dots between columns offer secondary confirmation.
