Description

WDDR-005 on the 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel carries a "Best Of" designation — recognition by the Wexler attribution system as one of the premier doubled die reverse varieties in the entire Proof Jefferson Nickel series. Cross-referenced as CONECA 68-R-II-C+VI, the variety combines Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with Class VI Distended Hub Doubling on the reverse. A very strong spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and both sides of the Monticello building — the strength of the spread placing this variety at the high end of the series for visual impact. An extremely close spread shows on FIVE CENTS. Die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, none are noted; on the reverse, a die scratch runs north-northeast from just right of the top of the first column, and a die gouge appears near the bottom of the roof north of center of the long right window. Cross-reference: CONECA 68-R-II-C+VI; Wexler WDDR-005, 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel.
