Description

Primary doubled die reverse for the 1963-D Franklin Half Dollar — the final year and final Denver Mint production of this series before its replacement by the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. DDR-001 exhibits light spread with extra thickness on both E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, affecting two of the most prominent text elements on the reverse design. Die stage tracking under UVC-321 and DMR-017 documents three states: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse confirmed at Mid-Die State (MDS), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Franklin Half Dollar reverse, designed by John R. Sinnock, features the Liberty Bell as its central device with E PLURIBUS UNUM positioned above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the periphery — the two text areas where this doubling is most visible. Denver struck approximately 67.1 million half dollars in 1963, the highest Franklin Half Dollar mintage of any single year and mint, making this a well-populated date for variety hunting. As DDR-001, this is the primary and most recognized doubled die reverse for the date, holding the lead position in the attribution sequence. Cataloged by VarietyVista, this variety marks the end of Franklin Half Dollar DDR production, as no subsequent die varieties could be created after the series concluded.
