1963-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
DDO-004 on the 1963-D Franklin Half Dollar shows a strong spread on LIBERTY, the 3 of the date, and the last T of TRUST, with lighter spread on IN GOD WE and TRUS of TRUST. Die markers: UVC-237 and DMR-005. Stage A is early die state. Stage B shows a light die crack on the lower left bell, placing it in mid die state. I-code markers: I-2 extra LIBER to the left of LIBERTY; I-2 extra 3 to the left of the 3 in the date. Doubling class is Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDO-004. The 1963 Franklin Half Dollar is the final year of the series — Kennedy Half Dollars replaced the Franklin design beginning in 1964 following President Kennedy's assassination. A DDO on the last-year Franklin carries collector significance beyond the variety itself, as it combines the interest of a terminal-date issue with documented obverse hub doubling. The 90% silver composition further anchors the coin as both a bullion and variety piece for collectors of mid-century U.S. coinage.
