1963-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-239 and DMR-007, this 1963-D Franklin Half Dollar DDO-006 presents light spread on LIB of LIBERTY and very light spread on IN GOD — a subtle doubling pattern concentrated on select inscription elements, with the strongest manifestation on the first three letters of LIBERTY and diminishing to very light displacement on the motto. Three die stages document progressive deterioration: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state showing a die crack over the designer's initials JRS (John R. Sinnock) and a die crack on the bust east of the designer's initials, with the reverse also reaching LDS. The Stage C die cracks concentrated near Sinnock's initials suggest stress concentration in the high-relief area where the bust truncation meets the field. The Franklin Half Dollar, designed by John R. Sinnock, was struck at the Denver Mint in 1963 — the final year of the series before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced it in 1964 following President Kennedy's assassination. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, each coin weighs 12.50 grams with a diameter of 30.61 mm. Sinnock's design features Benjamin Franklin's portrait on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse. As the terminal year of the Franklin Half Dollar series, 1963-D specimens attract collector interest for their position at the end of this relatively short-lived denomination design.
