1963-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

John Conway attributed this variety, designated WDDR-008 for the 1963 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, documenting very close Class II distorted hub doubling on the upper portions of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Restricting visible doubling to only the upper portions of the letters is a diagnostic clue about the hub misalignment geometry: when the tilt axis passes near the letter baseline, lower portions remain nearly aligned while the tops — farther from the axis — show progressively greater displacement. Class II doubling results from angular misalignment during secondary hubbing, and the very close spacing indicates a minor misalignment, producing a tight secondary impression detectable only under careful magnification. Jefferson Nickels from 1963-D were produced at Denver in substantial quantities during the final full year before mint marks were removed from circulating coinage in 1965. Schlag's portrait of Jefferson and his Monticello depiction continued unchanged during this period. Collectors should focus on the upper portions of E PLURIBUS UNUM for the close secondary impressions that define this variety.
