Description

Concentrating its doubling on the first O of MONTICELLO, the 1963-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-004 places medium hub doubling spread on one of the most examined inscription elements on Felix Schlag's reverse. The first O in the building's name sits in a prominent position where medium-strength displacement creates visible secondary contours alongside the letter's curved strokes. Die markers UVC-1668 and DMR-007 identify this working die across three documented stages: Stage A where both obverse and reverse are in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). A notable comment in the VarietyVista attribution notes that this variety can be found in United States Mint Sets — the annual uncirculated coin sets sold directly to collectors, meaning Mint Set rolls represent a viable hunting ground for cherrypickers. Attributed by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint issue was struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition at 5.0 grams. The 1963-D is among the final pre-SMS Jefferson Nickels, produced two years before the Coinage Act of 1965 disrupted normal mint set production. Focus examination on the first O of MONTICELLO for the medium secondary contours.
