Description
Cataloged with die markers UVC-1226 and DMR-005, DDR-002 on the 1963-D Jefferson Nickel shows medium spread on UNUM in the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse. The Denver Mint issue from 1963 was produced in standard copper-nickel composition during one of the highest-mintage years in Jefferson nickel history, as production ramped up ahead of the coin shortage that would disrupt operations in 1964-65. Medium spread on UNUM indicates the hub misalignment was sufficient to produce clearly visible letter separation, particularly on the curved strokes of the U letters. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse places E PLURIBUS UNUM in an arc above the estate, where die curvature can influence how doubling manifests. The UVC-1226 and DMR-005 designations allow collectors to match specimens against confirmed examples by checking for specific die scratches and polishing marks beyond the doubling itself — especially valuable when multiple DDR varieties affect the same text elements on a single date.
