1962 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent - Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030
Error
Description
Proof WDDO-030 exhibits a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 9 o'clock, producing bold doubling across an unusually comprehensive array of design elements — the date, Lincoln's eyelid, the lower nose, the lips, and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. This sweeping involvement of both inscription and portrait features reflects the pivot's position at the left rim, which maximizes angular displacement for elements on the right side and center of the obverse where the date, facial features, and motto all reside. Class V designates pivoted hub doubling in the Wexler system, and the counterclockwise direction means each secondary impression trails in the counterclockwise direction relative to its primary device. On proof surfaces created by the Philadelphia Mint's specially polished dies operating under elevated striking pressure, the eyelid, nose, and lip doubling resolves with stunning clarity — the frosted portrait set against mirror fields provides the ideal contrast environment for detecting fine anatomical shifts. This entry is the proof-specific record for WDDO-030, separate from any non-proof version. Obverse die markers include a die gouge east of the bottom of the ear and a short vertical scratch between the lower R and U in TRUST. The reverse carries a die gouge appearing as a dot south of the right A in STATES and a dot-like die gouge left of the lower I in UNITED. These paired reverse dot gouges offer a practical two-point screening system for preliminary die identification.
