1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-025

Description

Identified as a Class V pivoted hub doubling variety, the 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-025 exhibits a clockwise spread from a pivot point located at approximately 7 o'clock, with the resulting displacement most visible on the UST of IN GOD WE TRUST. In the Wexler classification system, Class V designates a pivoted hub doubling in which the working hub rotated slightly around an off-center axis during die production, creating doubling that grows more pronounced the farther a design element sits from the pivot. With the pivot near 7 o'clock — in the lower-left quadrant — the motto letters on the upper right received significant rotational displacement, while design elements closer to the pivot show minimal effect. An important aspect of this variety is that the doubling visible on the 2 in the date originates not from the individual die's hubbing but from the doubled working hub identified as WWHO-004, one of four doubled working hubs discovered for the 1962 cent dies whose identification triggered a comprehensive renumbering of the entire WDDO series. This means the date doubling and the TRUST doubling have separate mechanical origins — the former inherited from the hub and the latter generated during the die's own production — an unusual dual-source attribution that adds considerable numismatic interest. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running parallel to the rim through the bottom of the TRUST letters. This variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the massive 1962 business-strike production of over 606 million cents, the last year of the original copper alloy composition.
