1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-044
ErrorDescription
Linking directly to one of the four doubled working hubs that transformed the cataloging of 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent varieties, WDDO-044 exhibits a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 7 o'clock, most visibly affecting the letters in IN GOD WE TRUST. The doubling on the numeral two in the date, however, originates not from this die's own hubbing event but from the doubled working hub identified as WWHO-004 — one of the four hubs whose discovery prompted the comprehensive renumbering of the entire 1962 WDDO series. This dual-source attribution means the coin carries two layers of doubling with distinct mechanical origins: the Class V pivoted spread at 7 o'clock that was imparted during the die's production from the hub, and the WWHO-004 hub-level doubling that was already present on the hub itself before it ever touched this die. The variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c WDDO-044, with no additional cross-references currently known. Obverse die markers include a die scratch curving north-northeast from the upper right of the I in LIBERTY, along with numerous scratches running southwest-northeast through the date area. On the reverse, a die scratch extends northwest-southeast between the upper T and E in UNITED, and remnants of a die clash are visible on and above the right side of the Memorial roof, indicating this reverse die made unplanned contact with an obverse die at some point during its working life. This variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a business-strike issue during 1962, when over 606 million cents were produced in the final year of the original 95% copper alloy.
