Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1962 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-027 has a complex catalog history. Originally listed as WDDR-145, it was reassigned to replace the original WDDR-027, which was delisted after being identified as a doubled working hub (see WWHR-001). The current variety displays a close Class II distorted hub spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right across the inscriptions—a directional gradient characteristic of tilted hub impressions. The obverse die is also listed separately as 1962 5¢ WDDO-030, making this a combination doubled die obverse and reverse pairing. Reverse die markers include a light slanted die scratch above the first T of STATES. Collectors cross-referencing older guides should note the renumbering from WDDR-145, and the WWHR-001 connection explains why the original WDDR-027 was removed from the doubled die listings entirely.
