Description

Thirtieth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel, DDR-030 exhibits light spread on UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA with the spread increasing from left to right — a gradient that indicates rotational hub displacement where the pivot point was located near the left side of the design. VarietyVista documented this variety under UVC-1107 and DMR-038 across three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in Mid-Die State, and Stage C reaches Late Die State though also unconfirmed. The increasing spread intensity from left to right provides a directional fingerprint that distinguishes this variety from the other twenty-nine DDRs cataloged for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design has been in continuous use since 1938, and by 1962 the design was entering its twenty-fifth year — a milestone that the Mint marked with no design changes but continued high-volume production at Philadelphia. The light nature of the spread places this variety in the category requiring careful magnification for detection, and collectors should focus on the AMERICA and UNUM inscriptions where the rightward-increasing gradient is most pronounced, particularly on the final letters of each word.
